VOLVO FM12’S PROVIDE THE WONDER FOR WOOLWORTHS
22 May 2005 - Volvo Truck Ltd
Woolworths plc, one of the UK’s largest and best-known high street retailers, has taken delivery of 30 new 4x2 Volvo FM12 tractor units with I-Shift automated transmission
Operating at regional distribution centres in the North West, South West and South East, the trucks will transport the full range of Woolworths merchandise from warehouse to stores. ''We looked at a range of vehicles,'' says Glenn Martin, Woolworths’ Commercial Manager (Distribution), ''and what decided us on Volvo was a combination of competitive pricing and reliability. On top of that, we have been doing business with (supplying Dealer) Thomas Hardie Commercials for several years now, and we are very happy with the service.'' The trucks will be based at Woolworths’ Swindon distribution centre. Plated for operation at 34 tonnes and with 420bhp engines, the tractor units all have Volvo’s Globetrotter cab in ‘Comfort’ trim, although no overnight work is involved. ''Since these vehicles operate out of regional centres, the choice of cab was purely a question of providing a better working environment for the drivers. The guys do like the bigger cabs. The same is true of the I-Shift: it just makes life easier for the drivers.'' Although the trucks are owned and operated by Woolworths plc, drivers are provided by Wincanton Logistics, based at Chippenham, Wiltshire. Payloads will include home wares, children’s clothing and toys, confectionery, and electronic goods.
