After the incredible era of the Group B ‘supercars’, the World Rally Championship entered a new chapter in 1987. Many feared the loss of the awesomely quick Group B cars would diminish competition on the special stages of the world. However, the opening round of the 1987 championship battle proved that wouldn’t be the case! Now you can experience the beginning of a new era in World Rallying with the in-depth review of the 1987 Monte-Carlo Rally on DVD for the first time. This is the latest addition to the growing collection of classic Monte-Carlo Rally reviews to be released on DVD, and is joined by the 1988 event review, also out now. Each programme is packed with breathtaking rallying action from the famous special stages of Monte-Carlo, featuring the legendary drivers and iconic cars that defined a new era. Watch the likes of Juha Kankkunen, Timo Salonen, Miki Biasion, Kenneth Eriksson and Walter Rohrl behind the wheels of the new-look Group A machines, including the Lancia Delta HF four-wheel-drive, Audi Quattro 200, Mazda 323, Ford Sierra Cosworth and more. The ‘supercar’ period was over, but there was still plenty of controversy and drama in the World Rally Championship – as these fantastic reviews show. In 1987 Lancia was at the centre of a rules dispute following a complaint from Mazda, and brought a cloud over the end of the event when the result was decided by team orders. But that couldn’t detract from the stunning duel between the Lancias of Kankkunen and Biasion that dominated the event, captured in fabulous footage on the action-packed DVD review. The following year, in a Monte-Carlo Rally without its trademark snow, the event proved to be a real car-breaker, with leading teams eliminated by mechanical problems and high-speed crashes. The 1988 review captures the moment when Bruno Saby nearly threw away victory, and the sympathy crash that saw Alain Oreille’s Renault 11Turbo leave the road at the same spot. For many, the real highpoint of the ‘88 Monte-Carlo was the fight back by Mazda’s Salonen, the 1985 World Champion showing off his determination and style as he battled from 42nd to fifth at the end. The Monte-Carlo Rally is a favourite among fans, and when you see the action from 1987 and 1988 it is easy to understand why. The 1987 and 1988 Monte-Carlo Rally DVD reviews are released 14th April, priced at Ł10.99 on DVD, from leading video outlets or direct from Duke Video: Tel 01624 640000, fax 01624 640001 or email mail@dukevideo.com.
