SPEED CAMERAS IN CRISIS
19 April 2007 - Safe Speed
A BBC Investigation to be broadcast today highlights the poor rate ofprosecution resulting from offences detected by speed cameras. [1]
Paul Smith, founder of http://www.safespeed.org.uk, said: ''Speed cameras have been a disaster from beginning to end - and let''s hope the end is soon. They haven''t made the roads safer - in fact I''m certain that they have made road safety worse my misdirecting life-saving resources at every level in our fragile road safety system.'' ''Enough is enough - speed cameras are a bad joke. Let''s pull the plug. They are at the heart of a failed policy that''s costing real lives.'' ''I''m waiting to hear a Department for Transport official admit that speed cameras cause some people to avoid vehicle registration requirements. Then I''d ask him why that wasn''t fully considered before they embarked on this policy.'' ''Speed cameras are only supported by wishful thinking, dodgy statistics and a dangerously over-simplified view of reality.''
