ON THE ROAD 81 FROM THE ABD: DOWNLOAD YOURS NOW!
29 March 2007 - Association of British Drivers

The prospect of national road charging has got drivers - and the media - seriously rattled.

One of the loudest voices in the debate is the ABD''s; we''re one of the few groups consistently saying the idea is barely worthy of consideration - even many so-called drivers'' groups are in favour of the proposals.

With road tolls such a hot topic a large proportion of the latest edition of On The Road is devoted to the subject. There''s a look at it from a London perspective, plus a separate piece on why the idea will never work and what should be done instead. There''s also an article by Peter Roberts, the man who started the petition that''s put Downing Street in a spin. As well as all this, there''s a whole raft of smaller charging-related news stories from around the UK.

It''s not all bad news though; in Scotland there are plans to offer extra training for young drivers - the group most likely to be involved in an accident. The good news continues in Ealing, where bus lanes are being opened up to everyone in a bid to get the traffic flowing again. It seems the ABD message is starting to get through!

From this issue there''s a new piece called Hypocrites Corner; there are no fewer than four contenders to kick the section off! There''s also an update on what ABD London is up to plus details of numerous petitions you can sign if you''re so inclined - it''s unlikely that any will have the impact of Peter Roberts'' monster though!
