AVON TYRES LINKS WITH BRABHAM
27 January 2007 - Avon Tyres

Avon Tyres joins Brabham’s MSA British Race Elite initiative

Avon Tyres will link up with ex-Formula 1 driver and sportscar legend, David Brabham, as an official partner in the new MSA British Race Elite programme.

The initiative, launched at the Autosport International Show, is designed to offer selected promising young British racing drivers the chance to develop their skills by giving technical insights into every aspect of motor racing, from tyre technology to physical fitness and mind coaching.

As official tyre partner to the scheme, Avon will invite the selected drivers to its UK manufacturing headquarters at Melksham, Wiltshire, to experience:

an in-depth look at tyre manufacture
a visit to Avon’s dedicated motorsport tyre facility
a briefing on how tyres are designed and constructed
a thorough question and answer session with Avon’s motorsport tyre technical staff
a seminar on how to get the best from their race tyres and their importance in racecraft

Brabham personally selected Avon Tyres for the initiative, having worked with the firm in various categories during his racing career. He said: “I’ve learned a hell of a lot in the last 23 years, and I wish I’d known at the outset what I know now. I’ve worked with all of our official partners in the past and the experience and insight they have given has been absolutely invaluable.”

Avon motorsport boss and managing director of Avon’s parent company, Cooper Tire Europe, Julian Baldwin, added: “Avon Tyres has a very rich heritage in world motorsport, so we are delighted to be involved in such a worthy scheme as the MSA British Race Elite.

“Drivers rising through the junior ranks these days do not often get the chance to learn about such things as tyres in any depth, even though a good understanding of how their tyres work is one of the most important lessons they can learn. It will be wonderful to put something back into the UK motorsport scene.”

Potential candidates for the programme must have a UK passport, or be eligible for one, be aged between 16 and 25, hold an MSA race licence and have competed in a national championship for at least 12 months.

Drivers apply using a dedicated website (www.msabritishraceelite.co.uk) and a selection panel will choose six candidates from a shortlist of 20 applicants.
