STEVE NORRIS FLAGS OFF IAM LORDS VS COMMONS DRIVING MATCH
08 March 2006 - IAM Institute of Advanced Motorists
Peers and MPs swapped the despatch box for the gearbox yesterdaywhen former Transport Minister and London Mayoral challenger Steve Norris flagged off a unique driving challenge from the Houses of Parliament.
The drive out - from Westminster to Hendon''s Metropolitan Police College - was organised by the IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) as one of the events to mark the IAMs 50th anniversary this year. Although it was not a race, all the Peers and MPs taking part had to show that they could drive in a safe, progressive style throughout the nine-mile run. And an IAM examiner was in each of the specially liveried Volvo cars to ensure fair play. When they arrive at Hendon, the Westminster driving candidates had to tackle the skidpan and a driving theory test before points were awarded. Announcing the winners that evening at a Parliamentary reception, IAM President Nigel Mansell revealed that the Lords team had scored 202 points but that they were pipped at the post by the MPs with 203. The Peers taking part were Earl Attlee, Lord Brabazon of Tara and Lord Redesdale. And the MPs were Peter Bottomley (Worthing West), Andrew Miller (Ellsmere Port and Neston) and Bill Wiggin (Leominster).
