HELLA TAKES OVER AGLAIA GMBH, BERLIN
07 March 2006 - Hella

Strategic investment in the innovation field of camera-based driver assistance systems

The automotive supplier Hella KGaA Hueck & Co., Lippstadt, has taken over 100 percent of Aglaia GmbH, Berlin, with effect from March 1, 2006.

The company develops visual sensor systems for the automotive industry and has 30 employees. Sales are 2.5 million euros. The companies agreed not to release financial details of the transaction. The Berlin location is to be maintained and expanded into a competence center for image processing within the Hella Business Division Electronics.

With this acquisition, the light and electronics specialist Hella is specifically strengthening its know-how in the innovation field of camera-based driver assistance systems. These include active night vision systems, which are made up of camera, infrared headlamp and display, as well as systems for traffic sign, object and lane recognition.

Furthermore, Hella will shortly be starting series production of a rear view camera system. ''For the development of future light-based driver assistance systems, with which objects in road traffic can be specifically detected and made visible, the takeover of Aglaia is a strategically important investment in the future,'' said Dr. Rolf Breidenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Hella KGaA Hueck & Co.

In addition, Hella is aiming to increase customer benefits by linking different assistance systems and driving forward in a sustained manner the fusion of the sensor technology necessary for this.

The continuous development of driver assistance systems is accompanied by the European Union''s eSafety action program for road safety which aims to halve the number of road fatalities by 2010. Driver assistance systems from Hella based on the detection and analysis of the vehicle''s surroundings will make a major contribution to the achievement of this aim. Investigations carried out by the German ministry of transport have shown that such systems can have a preventive influence on more than 50 percent of all accidents.
