JAGUAR AND LAND ROVER APPRENTICES GEAR UP FOR GLOBAL COMMUNITY PROJECTS
22 February 2006 - Land Rover

Seventy intrepid apprentices from Jaguar and Land Rover''s dealer training programme will soon be packing up their overalls, donning their rucksacks and preparing to get their hands dirty as they embark upon two exciting global community projects.

The thirty-six strong team from Land Rover will be heading to rural Africa in support of the Tanzanian Children''s Fund. This entirely publicly funded charity not only runs an orphanage providing homes to hundreds of parentless or abandoned children, but also supports a number of schools across the country. It is here that the team will face their challenge; to build and furnish two classrooms which will provide over 100 children with both an education and a glimmer of hope for a brighter future.

On the other side of the globe the Jaguar team are off to the beautiful South American country of Peru. Aside from braving the altitude and tackling the gruelling Inca trail – a challenge in itself, the team will focus their attention on building a much needed community centre in the sprawling shanty town of Pamplona Alta, situated on the outskirts of the country''s capital, Lima. The centre will provide a base for social activities, medical clinic and recreation area for the many poor and disadvantaged children of the town.

This is the third project of its kind run by the dealer academy, with previous groups having completed projects in Kenya, India and the Amazon Basin. The community projects are entirely funded by those apprentices fortunate enough to be selected to take part. Quiz nights, car washes and collections are just some of the methods this year''s teams have employed to raise the £10,000 required to complete the work.

Adrian Birch, manager of the Apprentice Training Programme and founder of the initiative says: ''Within the industry this is a totally unique and incredibly rewarding project which takes young people out of their comfort zone and exposes them to the harsh realities people face on a daily basis. Many members of our group have not travelled further than Spain, so taking them to the remote recesses of some of the world’s poorest countries has a profound effect. Each year we are amazed by how individuals grow and mature personally as a result of their experiences. It is certainly an inspiring and thought provoking programme which leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of our apprentices and the communities we help.''
