ROB MASTERS ADD FIRST VOLVO TO THEIR SPECIALIST FLEET
20 February 2006 - Volvo Truck Ltd

Rob Masters Ltd, based in Wellingborough, Northants have bought their first Volvo truck - a high-specification 8x2 Volvo FH12 tractor unit with chassis-mounted 80 tonne/metre Hiab crane - to add to their highly specialised 27-strong fleet.

''The main reason for buying this truck was Volvo’s ability to give us exact pricing and availability when we needed it,'' explains Managing Director Rob Masters. ''The truck is obviously an unusual spec with a short 4.3m wheelbase, 8x2 tag axle configuration and the chassis-mounted crane, but Volvo, working in conjunction with Lorryloaders and TruckLogic, who fitted the crane, fifth wheel and other extras between them, were spot on with every aspect.''

Bought from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre Midlands in Kettering, the vehicle is a 500bhp, 65 tonne GCW truck with a Globetrotter XL cab in ‘Prestige’ trim, leather seats, radio/CD player and a 14-speed manual gearbox with retarder. For added security the truck has been fitted with satellite tracking and a Maple alarm system. The George Fischer sliding fifth wheel allows for a range of trailers to be used, while the Hiab crane can lift 3.3 tonnes at 18 metres.

''The combination of the 8x2 wheelbase, the heavy crane and the sliding fifth wheel makes this a very versatile truck,'' says Rob. ''It allows us to use a combination of trailers, carry a wide range of equipment and on numerous occasions has allowed us to eliminate the use of mobile cranes on site for our customers. The turning circle is much tighter than an 8x4 would be and we also get significant savings on fuel.''

Rob Masters Ltd will operate the Volvo from their Wellingborough base across the UK and Europe, transporting portacabins, generators and more unusual cargo such as swimming pool linings and helicopters.

The truck is on a four-year repair and maintenance contract with the Kettering depot.
