DRIVER INFORMATION OVERLOAD
18 February 2006 - Safe Speed

Speaking at a conference today, Edmund King of the RAC Foundation will highlight the dangers caused by an excess of driver information.

Safe Speed agrees that information overload is a frequent cause of crashes.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign (www.safespeed.org.uk) said: ''Speed cameras are a big user of driver attention and therefore add substantially to the problem. Checking your speedo alone in the speed camera era frequently takes 1 second out of every 30 and that''s 3% of a driver''s attention gone. Add in looking for cameras, checking and double checking speed limit signs and the total attention loss increases markedly.''

''Of all the roadside furniture, drivers find speed cameras uniquely threatening and consequently allocate considerable attention to them. Couple this with other information demands and we can clearly see that speed camera make the problem worse.''
