MOTOR INDUSTRY BACKS LONDON BID FOR 2006 MOTOR SHOW
25 February 2005 - Motor Show

The next British International Motor Show will be hosted at ExCeL in London''s docklands. ExCeL, and partners Single Market Events and London EventCo, won a three-way competitive pitch to host the 2006 event in a move that will take the motoring showcase back to the capital after a 30-year absence.

Commenting on the news, The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders chief executive, Christopher Macgowan, said, ''The motor industry is backing a bid which promises to deliver a world class event in the world''s greatest city. We believe a move to ExCeL will build on the show''s rich history, giving the motor show a platform that will reclaim its international reputation as a premier league event.''

He added, ''While we understand this decision will come as a disappointment to the Midlands, the reality is that ExCeL presented a very strong bid while the NEC was unable to deliver a proposal that responded to market demands.''

Organised by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the first motor show took place at Crystal Palace in 1903. From 1937 to 1976 it was held at Earls Court before moving to the NEC in Birmingham in 1978. The British International Motor Show has taken place every other year since then, with the last show in May 2004.

ExCeL deputy chief executive and managing director, Kevin Murphy, added, ''We are delighted that the motor industry has unanimously chosen to bring the UK''s biggest consumer exhibition to our world-class facility, utilising our entire 100-acre campus.''

Based in London''s docklands near London City Airport, ExCeL is home to a range of exhibitions and events, from travel trade exhibitions, consumer shows and sporting events for all the family, as well as product launches, conferences and corporate hospitality functions.
