TEACHER OF LIFE
25 November 2005 - Remploy Automotive
Nearly 20 years of dedicated work has paid off for a disabled Remploy Automotive worker who has qualified as a teacher and collected a top award.
John Hanaphy was severely injured when he was knocked off his bicycle when he was 13 years old. His injuries were compounded 15 years ago when he was in a motorcycle accident. Although John has been left with brain damage and physical disabilities, it has not stopped him from being extremely determined and positive. His ‘can do’ attitude has won him the thanks and admiration of his colleagues as well as a prestigious learning award. He joined Remploy, Britain’s largest provider of job opportunities for disabled people and people with health problems, 16 years ago after leaving college. John, aged 46 from Yardley, Birmingham, started working at Remploy Automotive’s Kitts Green factory in Birmingham as a shop floor operative. He qualified as a fork-lift-truck driver but his dedication to training and education saw him constantly advance. He went on to become an assistant analyst, then a web technician and later Training Officer. He’s now a full-time teacher at the factory which employs 120 people, the majority of who are disabled people. Remploy Automotive’s Kitts Green factory supplies sub-assemblies and services to a host of automotive customers, including Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin. He has a raft of further education qualifications gained mainly from evening course studies at East Birmingham College and Solihull College during the past 20 years. John’s dedication to teaching won him a special award called The Employers Award from City College, Birmingham, and almost three-years of part-time study at the University of Central England has result in John gaining a Certificate in Education, the professional qualification for a teacher. He’s also found time to study karate and is a registered Martial Arts Commission black belt second dan in the Shukokai Karate and he is also an expert in Tae-Kwon do. Dilip Yadav, Manager at Kitts Green, said: ''John is a truly determined character and dedicated to helping other to learn. His attitude to work and life is an example to us all.''
