Memorable Moments in Motor racing – a unique insight into the sport
When something significant happens in motor racing those involved in the sport describe it as having a ''Moment'' and these can vary from having a serious accident, to a famous win, or simply an amusing incident that the personality has always remembered. Now a new book, Memorable Moments In Motor Racing has captured the Memorable Moments from hundreds of world famous drivers, mechanics, artists and commentators. It is unique in not looking at what commentators have decided is a personalities ''Moment'' but in reporting what the person themselves thinks is their most Memorable Moment It gives an insight into what those who have been at the sharp end of motorsport for many years not only think about their achievements but also their aspirations for the future. Some of those interviewed tell complete stories about their ''Moment'' others give just one-liners – but all of them give a unique insight into the motor racing personalities themselves. New World Champion Fernando Alonso said: '' I think it was my pole position in Malaysia. However, I look forward to one day winning my home Grand Prix. Any win I have though is memorable, and winning for Renault is wonderful.'' Sir Stirling Moss simply says: ''Winning the Mille Miglia in 1955.'' Michael Schumacher says:'' It was to be World Champion with Ferrari. Now it’s done.'' Gerhard Berger talks about when he got into F1 and learned to use the turbo engined cars to maximum effect and what happened........ There are also some great stories from the sport. Formula 1 driver Guy Edwards tells how British Champion Mike Hailwood had broken his ankles and he had broken his wrists. In 1975 they were both recovering in hospital. The food was awful but the two decided that they could driver a car between them, with Guy operating the pedals and Mike the steering. They sneaked out drove the car to a local restaurant, had a slap up meal only to be stopped by the police on the way back. Probably because Hailwood had his plastered legs hanging out of the window of the car. A summons was about to be issued but on hearing the name Hailwood both were forgiven and sent on their way. The ''Memorable Moments'' were captured by motor racing enthusiast Mike Jiggle who originally set out to get the personalities Moments and autographs, put the in a scrapbook and auction them for NARA The Breathing Charity which he and his wife Ann are involved with. But so great was the interest that Mike decided to turn the ''Moments'' into a book so that they could be shared with motor racing enthusiasts around the World. He asked David Coulthard to write the forward and has donated his author’s fees to the charity. In his forward Coulthard says: '' Memorable Moments’ in Motor Racing contains the personal thoughts and opinions of some of the greatest drivers of recent years and provides a unique insight into what they regard as their finest moments. Like me, some of the drivers who have participated have not chosen what spectators, commentators, or fans of the sport would see as an obvious career highlight in their ''Memorable Moments'' He added: '' That’s the point of the book, it’s an insight into the private thoughts of these drivers and it gives the reader the chance to share something very personal with them.'' The book contains 300 ''Memorable Moments'' and is lavishly illustrated. Almost every ''Memorable Moment'' accompanied by a photograph, cartoon of Graham Turner painting which depicts the ''Moment'' or the racing personality. Mike Jiggle said: '' This book is a must for anyone who has been associated with the sport or who is simply a fan of the cars, the drivers, the commentators, the mechanics and their amazing achievements. The book is published by Cyan and Barzilay and costs £20.00
